A Tarlov cyst is a type of spinal fluid-filled sac that grows along the nerves that exit the spinal cord at the sacrum (tailbone). They are also known as sacral meningeal cysts or perineural cysts. Tarlov cysts are most common in women and are often asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause any symptoms. However, in some cases, they can cause pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs.

The exact cause of Tarlov cysts is unknown, but they are thought to be caused by a weakness in the dura mater, the outermost layer of the meninges, which are the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. This weakness can allow cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to leak out and form a cyst.

Tarlov cysts are often diagnosed during an MRI scan of the spine. Treatment for Tarlov cysts is usually not necessary if they are not causing any symptoms. However, if they are causing symptoms, treatment may include:

  • Medication to relieve pain and inflammation
  • Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the spine
  • Surgery to drain the cyst or remove it

The prognosis for people with Tarlov cysts is generally good. Most people with Tarlov cysts do not experience any symptoms and do not require treatment. However, for those who do experience symptoms, treatment can be effective in relieving pain and improving quality of life.
